Esmee
“Well you look like hell and we have been at work A little over and
hour. Of course out of that hour we have only been with the patients about
fifteen minutes. So, do you want to tell me what happened? I asked Emmet walking
into the night time nurses’ station where he was sat on one of the lounging
chairs with his head in his hands.
“I’ve been Crystaled.” He moaned looking up from his hands to look at
me while forcing a smile over his face even though his eyes were wet with
tears. My heart fluttered inside my chest and I swallowed heard trying to get
myself to focus. I hated it when Emmet cried, he didn’t do it often and when he
did it often meant he felt he had done something deeply wrong.
“What did she do?” I asked sitting on the chair opposite him. “Eat a
human child in her sandwich or something?” I asked trying to make Emmet laugh,
however he barely cracked a smile. I would kill Crystal the next time I saw
her. No one did this to Emmet.
“She claimed that Mi tried to attack her. Of course she didn’t. When I
got in there she was rooting around the floor covered in Ensure searching
through the sharps box.”
“Is She OK Emmet?”
“No, well yes, she didn’t get the sharps but in every other aspect no.
I just carried her face first through the corridors.”
“Well you had to; she was trying to hurt herself.” I said gently
getting to my feet and sitting on the edge of his chair, wrapping my arms
around his shoulder and kissing him on the cheek making the same fluttering
return to my chest. After 14 years of knowing him and five years of them married I
still loved him so much that it almost hurt me in the most glorious way ever. I
was living the fairy-tale but right now my price was crying and none of my love
seemed to be helping.
“She stopped Esmee,” Emmet whined, his eyes filling up again. “I told
her to stop and she did but I did it anyway. It terrified her. I don’t think I will
ever be able to get the sound of her screaming out of me head. The way it was
so quiet. She truly thought she was screaming her head off but she was barely whimpering.
She’s been so hurt and she’s just a little girl. I made it worse Esmee I told
her that it was OK to cry and then I through her into the ECA for doing exactly
that.”
“Well I’m sure you had your reasons. It’s OK; anyone who meets you can
see you do everything you do because you care about them. You’re a great nurse
Emmet and an even better husband and you know what you have to do. Go in there
and sit with her, she won’t thank you for it right away bust she will
eventually.” I soothed running my fingers through his short cropped hair.
“You’re too good to me? Emmet said gently arranging his face back into
a smile. “What would I do without you Mrs Bear
“Well would I do without you? Your amazing Emmet, don’t let any of them
ever grind you down.”
