Esmee
“Well there’s never a dull
moment in our job.” I half sighed and half smiled as Emmet laid a now soundly
sleeping Mi down into her bed and brought the covers up to her chin and
whispered sweet dreams gently before throwing himself into the lounging chair
beside Mi’s bed.
“So where is out little monkey
to now then,” He asked.
“Sent her down to the gastro
wards, thought she could pull out some more NG tubes when she was on my watch.”
I smiled even though I felt defeated. Jokes could make everything go away if
you believed in them enough. They told you if you smiled the world would smile
with you and I was willing to give it a try even if inside I felt sick and
Emmet looked almost as green as I felt.
“Some student nurse found her
adorable so I sold her, on the pro side we now have enough to by that DVD player
you wanted and…”
“It’s all right Esmee, she’s
fine.” Emmet whispered sitting up in his chair again and reaching over to me,
taking both of my hands into his as his index finger played with my wedding
ring.
“I feel sick.” I moaned
letting the smile drop from my face. What was the point of the whole world
laughing with you when secretly you felt like crying anyway?
“I know, you’re an amazingly
gentle shade of green at the moment. Coincidently looks lovely with the top you
are wearing but I bet it doesn’t feel all that great.”
“You know what can Happen
Emmet, and it would have been my fault.
Mia wanted to sit with her and Mi loves kids. It says all over her
reports that she seems to come alive around children. I just wanted to see it
because all I have ever seen is someone that is too hurt to care anymore but I
should have known that it wouldn’t have been in her best interest. I just
wanted to see her happy for once,” I moaned.
“Since when has her being
happy not been in her best interest? You can’t beat yourself up all the time
Esmee. You’re a good nurse, no, you bloody fantastic nurse and you make good judgment
calls.”
“I’ve seen too much. I know
too much. I’ve felt too much.”
“And that’s what makes you brilliant.”
